I recall both of these videos being in heavy rotation during my earliest exposure to MTV - and also being the kinds of music and videos that my parents would roll their eyes at. Devo's obviously a more provocative and art-driven band, Mark Mothersbaugh went on to create waves of indelible cartoon soundtracks for a subsequent generation, and "Whip It" is instantly recognizable. The problem is that "I Ran" is *also* instantly recognizable, and I think the song leans harder into its '80sness, if that makes sense. Devo synthed and was like, "that's cool, now let's weave that into some art," and Flock said, "Dude, I heard you like synths, so I put some synth in your synth so you can synth while you synth." Honestly, this was closer than I thought it would be, but I gave my vote to "I Ran."

Yes, I *THINK* "I Ran" will edge out "Whip It" for these reasons, but I dunno.

Flock of Seagulls always wins for me ( and they also win the hair contest!)

You didn't know I Ran (So Far Away)?!?!?

I realized you grew up in a small town but I didn't know it was also under a rock.

Seriously, didn't you at least listen to music during rumspringa?

I can't believe I let you be the best man at my wedding. Good lord.

I think this should have been more like 8 vs. 9. No way I Ran (So Far Away) is a #1 seed. Actually this bracket is tough, so most of these songs should be 8 vs. 9. But they had to be ranked somehow, so here we are...

I had to vote for Whip It just because I grew up mere minutes from Akron, so I remember it being a bit of a big deal. I don't remember hearing the song when it came out, but when Whip It became more popular (I assume due to MTV), some of the moms in our neighborhood branded it "Punk" and banned us from listening. They thought that listening to punk would cause us to do drugs or worship Satan, or some other nonsense. This, of course, made us listen to it every chance we could get.

Yeah, I feel like the remaining brackets are packed so tightly that the numbers are only used to see who plays whom in the next round, any upset might not be THAT big of an upset.

I totally didn't think of how close you grew up to "Ground Devo," and I don't think I ever knew about this puritanical force that tried to stop you from listening to punk! The thing they didn't count on was that one of the attributes of being punk is not giving a fuck what authorities want! So they miscalculated a little on their approach! Go, Devo! --Keith

These songs led the sound for the 80s - other big early 80s hits had a more late 70s vibe, less synth, more guitar. These bands had odd videos, equally odd looks, bizarre lyrics - all key 80s traits for bands. Honestly, 50/50, Devo did weird 1st 😆

That's a fair consideration, I was heading down that road but was overwhelmed by the Seagulls' 80ishness!
