This is the encapsulated conundrum of this entire podcast: Party All the Time is by virtually every conceivable measure a terrible, terrible song, and Jessie's Girl is a classic. And yet Eddie Murphy + Rick James + '80s music production, synths, basslines, etc. = too goddamn '80s to be ignored. I hate it. Also, Jenn & I invariably sing "Girl I can't undertand it, why you want a herpe."
I'm going with Jessie's Girl because Rick Springfield was such a big part of my 80s. This is one of the first times I'm voting based on my experiences with the songs vs. just based on the sound because I have SO many 80s memories of Rick Springfield and Jessie's Girl and really no memories/experiences involving Party All the Time (thank god). I still can't go roller-skating without thinking fondly of Rick and this song; and although our hosts would have you believe no one saw Hard to Hold, my friends and I saw it in the theater on opening weekend because we were such huge fans. I had the Jessie's Girl cassingle (for you youngsters - that was a cassette tape with just one song on each side), and I had the Hard to Hold album and listened to both of those over and over and over and over. (And for any other Rick Springfield fans out there, he's held up pretty well over the years. Still looks and sounds pretty good.)
Did I say nobody SAW it, or that nobody LIKED it? Big difference 😂 ! But I am glad you enjoyed it, and that Rick is getting his share of well-deserved votes for what Dr. Janet aptly called "heartthrob rock." I may watch "American Anthem" with you, but "Hard to Hold" is gonna be a much tougher sell! 😂
“Party All the TIme” would be forgettable if you weren’t a huge Eddie Murphy fan who then was embarrassed that the guy who you thought was so good was now so awful. And yet the elements of his awfulness are just SO gluttonously and greedily 80s. Your point about “Jessie’s Girl” being legendary is true, though. So what it lacks in synth and drum machines, it may make up for in that experiential way. I think “Party All the Time” is 80s enough to be dangerous, here.
To be fair: I continued to be a Murphy fan into the 90s and loved many of his movies; it was just the crushing disappointment of this non-stand-up album that engendered the hard feelings toward this song. That and the fact that it truly fucking sucks.
I suggest a full head-to-head listen through of Murphy's album vs. Bruce Willis' "The Return of Bruno" so we can establish the true emperor of whattheeverlovingfuck.
There's actually a version of "Party all the time" by Gwyneth Paltrow! It's on the show "Glee". Do you guys have what it takes to watch it? I'm voting for Eddie because, c'mon, it's Eddie F Murphy!
🤣 "Love Somebody" is probably the most overly-dramatic Springfield song, but I will admit that it's probably my favorite of his. Currently watching "Bop Til You Drop" as directed...WTF????? This song SUCKS OUT LOUD, but the VIDEO? This video is among the worst videos I have ever seen! Thanks for the recommendation!
So you're 100% right that *I* am hunting high and low for the synthpop sound in my quest, that's what's most 80s to *me*, but you can determine what's most 80s to *you*(granted, you're imprisoned by our tastes here, so you're getting a steady diet of synthpop)! Joe definitely has at least a slightly different aesthetic for this than i do, given his nominations vs. mine (this matchup is a perfect example!). So don't feel like you have to vote for Eddie Murphy! Unless you want to help validate me😂! You're welcome for the "Party All the Time" blast, and for that song being stuck in your head all day at work!

Love the alternate lyric! It's almost like we engineered this matchup just to piss people off. Mission accomplished!

I saw Dr. Noah Drake, I mean Rick Springfield, in concert recently and he did not disappoint. I am 100% on Team Jessie's Girl!
I think he needed your vote, this one is very very close!

Jessie's Girl is a pretty legendary 80s song. This one is a no brainer. And being a creepster dude is also pretty damn 80s.
Party All the Time is pretty forgettable, so hard to think of it as being in the 80s. Since, you know, one never thinks of it.
Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that creepy dudes are kind of as 80's as a Casio keyboard.

I may try this this week. Just throw them both into a playlist, and release the hounds...wish me luck!

Wow! Well, I was unaware, so I immediately went and watched Gwyneth...I am forever changed, probably not for the better. 😂
Pop culture never dissapoints, my friend!
Oh god, I forgot about (because, again, it's forgettable) his ooh woo ooh in the song. Just terrible stuff. And thanks for playing a lot of it for me.
It IS terrible. I cannot argue that.
You're welcome for the excessive plays!😘
