Perhaps the best sentence ever uttered in the history of the English language:

“Peter was apparently subsequently absorbed into Matthew‘s mustache, which is sentient now.”

Have you SEEN this mustache? This wasn't a joke.

Notwithstanding the gritty truth to the subject itself, one MUST examine the creativity and uniqueness of this sentence. Pure poetry.

Hands down Cyndi for me in this match-up. And to answer Keith's question: of course I saw the 1985 movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and I've proudly seen it more than once (in the theater, on VHS rental, and streaming in more recent years). Catholic school girl Sarah Jessica Parker needs to sneak out of her house in order to compete in a dance competition to try to win a spot on the tv show "Dance TV;" and Helen Hunt plays her zany friend with crazy '80s style. What's not to love? It's '80s gold! And speaking of 80s gold: for god's sake Keith and Joe - WATCH THE GOONIES!

Well, you have sold me on the song AND movie "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"! Now I have to watch it, I guess. And OK, we will also watch "The Goonies" at our earliest convenience! I have been watching (and being heavily disappointed by) a lot of 80s movies recently (long-term prep for the 80s-est Movie season). Just watched "Working Girl" tonight, and I really was completely bored by it.

Thanks so much for the plot summary! And for listening to this show!

I missed it when it came out, and then just ... I guess none of my friends ever brought it up? Marcia and I are going to watch it here this week!

Cyndi, huge hair, wonderful lyrics, killer video, bonkers outfits! You can't get any 80er than that. I'd like to have fun forever with Cyndi and the girls and my vote goes to her. There's a pretty solid rendition of "Break my stride" in spanish though, called "No te preocupes", and here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSzoj1mEz0s . Enjoy!

WOW! What an interesting video! 😂

I am going to be spending some time translating those lyrics, but I imagine bikinis are mentioned in there somewhere! 😂

Maybe it's because it's new to me, but I like "No Te Preocupes" more than the original!

Thank you for sharing this gem, Alejandro!

Glad you guys appreciated the video! 🤣 The aesthetics is super 90's, it was shot in Bahia, Brazil. Oddly enough, there are no references to bikinis in the lyrics!

Cyndi is the highest level of 80s royalty. I would wear my pink denim skirt and every necklace and bangle I owned and wanted to BE Cyndi Lauper. And how she originally said she wouldn't do the song until she put her own perspective on it...just further proves that we're not worthy of her.

I actually knew one of the 'toids -- I just watched the Girls Just Want to Have Fun video a few months ago and I had to look up whether it was her real mom in it or not because it looks so much like her.

Obviously, this vote's for you, Your Highness.

I think this song is the epitomy of the 80's! In fact I think this song should be the #1 anthem of the 80's. I do like the Matthew Wilder song (it's got a catchy tune) but it's got NOTHING on Cyndi.

If early voting is any indicator, you will at least get a chance to have Cyndi around for at least one more round! Love your enthusiasm for it!

Hold up: I am just now realizing what racist opening verse "Break My Stride" has - "You went to China to get your laundry cleaned?" THE FUCK, MAN? And then you introduce me to "I Don't Speak the Language," which is all about a "brown native girl" who makes the singer "[leave] the tempo of civilized man" to become "a savage?" Dude. Seriously. I mean, casual racism *was* so '80s, but still.

Oh, SHIT!

I never realized that China/laundry connection was a racism thing until right this second, just thought it was random. And THEN, I played the other song on the pod, but wasn't listening to the lyrics at all, just generally bored with how garbagey it was, but WHOA 😳!!

Cyndi all damn day. Sometimes when I'm driving with the windows down and singing terribly and loudly along to Taylor Swift or Dua Lipa or Charli XCX I think "What the hell, man?" And then I remember that my dad listened the heck out of "She's So Unusual" on cassette, as well as Sheena Easton's "Best Kept Secret," and then I just smile and destroy the bridge to Swift's "Cruel Summer."

Life's too short to worry about what you SHOULD love, and just love what you love! Belt it out, my brother! Let nothing break your stride! (Wait ,this feels like the wrong reference.)

(Love these 'Toids about your dad, too!)🤗

Cyndi is just a legend with so many good songs, and a killer live performer. One of my favorites is "I Drove All Night" which was pretty much her last hit, and that came the very last year of the 80s. So even though she still made some great music later, she really is fully of the 80s.

Oddly, the wife and I were playing darts at a place over the weekend and "Break My Stride" came on in the bar. I couldn't tell you the last time I heard that song, but I knew all the words and sang along. (I for some reason also have a very specific memory of him doing it on Solid Gold, with very white boy moves) And it's not like I owned a copy.

So "Break My Stride" is certainly etched the memory of the 80s, making this a closer choice than the seedings suggest. But it's still the Goddess of Queens for the win.

It's weird, like he took that Solid Gold "performance," and made it into the "official" music video? Perhaps he had zero budget? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Definitely agree on Cyndi, but even though "Break My Stride" annoys the shit out of me, there's no denying its 80s sound!

Even though I have lost my taste for "Break My Stride," there is no shame in voting for it, it checks every single 80s box, including if there were a box for "creepy mustache"!
