I had never heard I Melt With You before this show, and now in the second round I can confirm that I am a massive fan. This is cool that I'm getting into new (80s 😆) music... 😎
So as the kid form Georgia who hung at dance clubs...
I love both of these songs so much. The reason I voted Naked Eyes is mostly because I think of Aimee Mann as a transcendent talent who has been musically and culturally significant from the 80s to today, even if record sales and charts don't reflect that. Naked Eyes is still just an 80s' band and never left that decade.
The other reason they are so 80s to me is that they are another one of those English 80s groups so influenced by the Northern Soul scene of the 60s-70s, which Always Something There to Remind Me was a part of. I don't remember of you talked a out it in the first round matchup, but the version relevant to their cover would not be the Dionne Warwick version, rather it would be the version from English singer Sandie Shaw that was a huge #1 hit in the UK in 1964. That would have been the one these guys heard and made them want to do their own version. It charted in the States but not very high. It's a smoking version:
We did NOT talk about the Sandie Shaw version! TOOOIIIIID! I just went and listened to her version, and it definitely is much more relevant than the Warwick version. (Thanks for sharing!)
I definitely need to read more about Northern Soul...is there a book or a documentary you can point me to?
I read a book last year about the history of Northern Soul but the title is escaping me. I got it from the library. BBC had a decent hour-long documentary about ten years ago. Marc Almond from Soft Cell actually appears in it.
There is also a narrative film just called Northern Soul, not a great story but it captures the time period and the scene pretty well. There is another one called SoulBoy that I have not seen because I haven't been able to find it on streaming or an American DVD. It's supposed to be better, and it has some young actors who would become more famous later, like Alfie Allen from Game of Thrones and Felicity Jones.
Aimee's voice will carry her straight to victory! Can´t wait for the foreigners' face offs!
Hush, hush, Alejandro, keep it down now!
No, wait! I agree with you, so go ahead and be loud!
Also, here's a spoiler on Foreigners: You and Leter Pames Jomax are my favorites to win it all! 🫶
