Tainted Love ... one no-rhythm guy with a keyboard and another no-rhythm guy who's super pitchy putting a glammed-up white face over top of a talented black woman's song, then becoming famous and somehow losing money on the deal? That sounds like the most 80s thing ever.

Welcome to the show, Greg!

For those who don't know, Greg is an accomplished drummer, so I think the world to Greg is "no-rhythm guys"!

HOWEVER, your analysis of this situation is hilarious, if maybe slightly oversimplified! hahahaha Well done, sir!

*Oh, and regarding your case for "the most 80s thing ever" you forgot to mention facts already in evidence: both white guys are absolutely obliterated on cocaine for the entire process!

This one is so tough for me, it's a proverbial Sophie's Choice. Take on Me and Safety Dance are both seriously important songs to my adolescent self, albeit in different contexts. Take on Me was the song to sit by myself with my headphones and Safety Dance was about letting myself go at the club. (Also missing from this contest - Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol). I just adore both of those songs.

I think I'm going with Safety Dance, as much as it kills me to go against A-ha and one of the best videos of all time.

The second matchup is easy. Tainted Love, nothing to even discuss. Electric Avenue shouldn't have even made this round, a travesty that people voted for it over Money for Nothing.

Both of yours love of Electric Avenue makes me question your sanity.

No reason to apologize for shitting on Cinderella, even the ones who listened to them then hate them now. They absolutely were the worst of the hair metal bands, and that's saying something because there were soooooo many bad ones.

I even listened to some hair metal back then, but Cinderella just never did it for me, thanks for giving me permission to dump on them! 😂

As a thought experiment, if "Money for Nothing" had won, vs Tainted Love, who would you take? Tougher call, right?

Slightly tougher call. Vote would still be the same, but without the derogatory comments.

Men, it sucks to see Dire Straits, Tears For Fears and Men at Work go! But I understand the 80ness of the songs that beat them. I'll go for A-HA and Soft Cell on this. And take my word on this: the final showdown will be between the n 1 seed in the Movie Region and the n 2 seed in the Foreigners Region!

There have been a lot of songs I have been sad to see leave the tournament. (I really thought "Party All the Time" had a victory within itself!)

A-ha has a chance to get out of this region, but it's going to be very very close, I think. But I also think that if you put money on your predicted final, that you just might win!

My reference for Safety Dance is so 90s, I first heard/saw it on Beavis and Butthead. It didn't take them long to flick over, but I don't mind it, it's so random and so damn 80s. It's gonna squeeze my vote out of me, tugging at my 90s heartstrings 😆

Both of these are massive heavyweight clashes, I'm going Tainted Love in the second.

The matchups just get tougher and tougher to call. But I love that you came about this song from a 90s cartoon! Can't argue with either of those picks! --K

Not totally on topic, but were music videos kind of a fad? Like were they so weird in the 80's because they were novel, and they were a new way to find new music? I really don't know what the state of music videos are now, since I haven't kept up with cool music for at least 10 years now. Pop Up Video was my favorite show back in the 90's though...

There are still music videos, just none of us watch them. Joy Oladokun, one of my favorite singers, put out a super-cute video for her song Sweet Symphony last year.

Joe, hadn't heard that song, pretty good stuff!

Gen, the first thing that came to my mind after reading your comment is the incredible nature of the OK Go videos. If you haven't seen them, do yourself a favor and check them out! --Keith
