This was the toughest decision for me yet and the first time your discussion convinced me to change my mind.

Me too for sure. Both exemplify the 80s in tone and spirit.

I just genuinely like the Irene Cats tune and I also was of the opinion that the only good thing about Maniac is the dance montage that is done to it. Not really a fan of the song, but is does have a shit ton of synth. It just feels almost like a character of the 80s, which to me is different than the 80s-est.

I also will add that John Booth's comment definitely struck a chord with. Well put. Speaking of slow builds, will Bonnie Tyler show up in another region?

Hmmmmm...will Bonnie Tyler show up? I like her chances in the Singers Region...

How can you not vote for Maniac, which, as so astutely pointed out by Joe, is "the wedgie in the buttcrack of the 80s"? Joe - I cannot stop laughing at that comment! It may end up being my favorite in the entire season.

As stated elsewhere, this is a really close call: I waffled back and forth during my commute and ultimately give the edge to Irene because I think a good slow build is a hallmark of the '80s (see Believin', Don't Stop) and Sembello just kinda dives in with the heavy synth and drum machines. (Which, to be fair, I do really dig. If anything, perhaps there is *too* much electronica to be truly representative of the wider sound of the decade.) Also I'm not heavily invested in either, because I don't think the winner makes it out of the second round. More importantly, in what world is Pittsburgh the pierogi pinnacle? Is this some of that Mahoning Valley bias because Cleveland refuses to recognize the soveriegnty of Youngstown?

Listen, Pittsburgh has a Pierogi Festival; the Pirates have a pierogi race during games; there are numerous pierogi restaurants/food trucks in the great Pittsburgh metropolitan area. I'm not comparing PA pierogis to their NE Ohio cousins, but I'm saying that the Steel City has a claim on those delicious doughy sumbitches.

...and now I'm hungry for them. Well done.

I'm with you, John. Super close call but Maniac is too much. It's just. too. much. I definitely get the slasher movie vibe from it. What a Feeling does have some disco too it, but it's more 80's for me.

Literal steel town girl on a literal Saturday night here 👋 I think the buzz-buzz snyth-y thing is supposed to represent the welding, as Alex/Beals is a welder. No pierogis were harmed in the making of this film, though a few lobsters might've been. You will get the reference when you watch the film -- You have your orders!!
