It is definitely true that Duran Duran were not to me what Simple Minds was in the 80s (and 90s). I own several Simple Minds albums and zero Duran Duran. I don't dislike them and never hit skip or change the station when they come on, but hearing them on the radio or MTV was enough for me to get my fill.
Hey Keith and Joe, good to hear you guys again, and happy labor day! (labor day is on May the 1rst here in Argentina, just a couple of days before Star Wars day). Let's get back to business: my vote goes to Don't You Forget About Me, because it's an awesome song and also because I haven't gotten over Duran Duran crushind dear old Sheena Easton in the first round. Can´t wait to hear Joe's take on the bands final!
Well, I tried! I don't for a second think that Axel F not making it is any reflection on its 80s-ness, just on my lack of any kind of influence on my (so-called) friends. (See if I vote for you in that World's Most Unusual Beard contest, Kevin!) (I kid.)
This one's tough...I didn't know A View to a Kill before this, and it's so undoubtedly 80s in sound -- I absolutely would've correctly guessed the era without knowing anything else. But Don't You Forget About Me has become so iconically associated with the 80s, even though yes, it could transcend the era.
(Here's Circus Atari fwiw. Launch one dude up to pop the balloons, make sure you get under him and launch the other dude. When we'd play as a family, I'm pretty sure my mom splatted the players on purpose because she'd laugh her ass off. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND_X-VSXWac )
"Don't You Forget About Me" is certainly the more memorable, lasting, and (probably) better song - and yet I think its greatness could have succeeded in any other era as well. No other decade could have produced "A View to A Kill," though, which means it gets my vote, although it's really a close call. Thinking back to earlier episodes, one question I considered was "How much cocaine was likely involved in the production of this song?" and to me, Duran Duran's snowpile is much larger.
This one isn't even something I have to even think about, definitely Don't You Forget About Me. If the Duran Duran song was Rio I may have some actual thinking to do. But this one is their most forgettable hit. I think Joe is the only person I know that would say A View to a Kill when asked to name a Duran Duran song.
Ok LOVE Duran Duran and generally would have a hard time voting against them, their impact on 80s music, their crush-worthiness, their videos, OH just the whole package. Bur, if you step back and ask which song is more 80s, which more defines the genre, in this match, it has to be Simple Minds. The song has the 80s production and if we think about the bracket region (movies) it simply better represents it.

Thank you, Alejandro!! Good vote! And don't worry, Joe really lets it rip for the Bands Final!
Let’s not build up expectations. I was restrained and dignified for Bands.

This is what I was struggling with, and how I came into the show. I think if I did the show again, I'd vote "View"! --K

Okay, wow. Listen man, if you listen to the episode, I say quite clearly that it's nowhere near their best song. So, my top five Duran Duran songs:
1. Girls on Film
2. Notorious
3. The Reflex
4. Rio
5. Wild Boys/Hungry Like the Wolf (tie)
I comment as I listen in real time. I'm edgy.
It's one of your most endearing qualities! --K
Does it indicate that I came of age in the 90's if my favorite Duran Duran song is Come Undone?
Yes. BUT--great fucking song! --Keith
