As noted: Huey's voice & the News' sound were iconic over the decade (Point!); Huey & crew really wrote *both* of these songs (Point!); Back to the Future is more of an '80s movie: The peak stardom of Michael J. Fox; the idealization of Boomer nostalgia - oh, the rabbit holes we could visit on *that* one - coupled with Huey & the News' throwback sound that's sculpted into '80s pop; the youthful core of Fox, Thompson & Glover vs. the older, late '70s-bred comedic stars. I give this one to "The Power of Love." ::dove bursts from chest; dies::
I dislike both of these songs and really don't care which one wins this matchup. After listening to the podcast, I still wasn't sure which one I was going to vote for. I was considering abstaining, but then I read John Booth's comments here, which swayed me to vote for Power of Love. Thanks for the assist, John!
Starting with this episode, I am deciding how to vote before listening to the podcast. I want to see if you can change my mind. Of course in this episode you split, so thanks for the help...
That's fair take, though I personally wouldn't put Ghostbusters any higher than 5 in this region, I think Huey took a downgrade to be able to be paired against nemesis Ray Parker, Jr. Seedings in here, especially in our first region, were more about getting the cute matchups (7/8 matchups are thematic). The future regions I think are better seeded, but opinions will vary, just like they do in the NCAA tournament!
While I would agree Ghostbusters is overtly synth-y and clearly cannot exist outside the 80s, I would also argue The Power of Love has the sax, keyboard, and pop-y sounding swag that typified non-hair band 80s rock which really does not transcend the 90s, etc. Voting the better song :)
For me the songs can't be separated from the wider context of the films they represent. Back to the Future is more 80s specific, the whole thing circling around 1985, etc. So the Power gets the 🗳️
Note, to all who already commented, check the post again! I edited it to add a picture of Joe as Marty McFly, as mentioned in the episode! :D
I'm pretty sure Joe's hair in that photo is the 80s-est thing ever.
To be fair, you've never seen pictures of me with a perm Freshman year of college. That might be MORE 80s?
We can make this "seeing of your perm" happen, though, right? The listeners DESERVE it, Joe!
Dude, you were there. You saw it. Do you think I'd've let any of those photos survive?

Wel done, sir. Well done.
Oh, & the picture of Joe & Chris as Marty & Doc is gold. Pure gold.

Glad to be of no service to you, John! :D
Both of these songs are seeded too low.

An excellent and persuasive comment...you may have changed my mind, Dr. Janet!
Great Scott, what a showdown in the arena of 80sness! This is gonna take some pondering.
I did not know the Ghostbusters back story -- I almost changed my mind after listening to the episode. But I still begrudgingly gave it my vote.
I am sorry we put you through that.

You and Janet are helping me see things differently... 4th-dimensionally, perhaps!
