All I can think of when I hear Oh Yeah! is the Twix commercial ("chocolate...crunchy..."). I know, I add little to the discourse. I only learned this song was called "Axel F." a few months ago (thanks Kato) but it's quintessential 80's to me. I predict a Cinderella story in the making -- Axel F. goes all the way!!
In your defense, you were like 3 and 4 when these songs came out! Having someone who hasn't heard some of these songs will be valuable for an "at first blush" opinion that we can no longer go back and generate!
It's true -- I experienced the 80's first-hand, but not in the same way you and Joe did. If you decide to go on to The 90s-est after a few seasons, I'm right there. (Though probably with just as little to add, because I'm more of a "it just SOUNDS right" kind of person with music.)
I was all ready to vote for Oh Yeah cuz I love the movie Ferris Bueller, and it was a much bigger part of my '80s than Beverly Hills Cop. But dammit, I've been convinced Axel F is the more '80s song, so I voted for Axel F. (And let's be honest - whichever one wins isn't going to matter anyway because it should just lose in the next round. So I'm not agonizing over this one. 😁)
I love it, Gen! I can't remember who this winner will go up against, but maybe you'll pull off a huge upset. Upsets are the best part of brackets, imo. 😊
I agree this one is a squeaker in which one is most 80s. But I had to go with Axel F. The synth just makes it more 80s. Oh Yeah is more German avantgarde and not as typical 80s. At least how I define it. You can't really name other songs from the 80s that have any similarities to Oh Yeah.
Axel F, like West End Girls, was a synth tune I obsessively tried to catch on the radio and MTV. And Harold Faltermeyer's other music is in your '80s memories whether you know it or not, in the form of themes from Fletch and - waaaaaait for it - Top. Gun. Anthem.
This was another surprisingly tough choice. I remember sitting in the movie theater listening to Oh Yeah as the principle got on the bus at the end of Ferris. It is burned into my memory, much more so than anything in Beverly Hills Cop. However, that synth. Axel F nailed it. Every synthy sound oozes 80sishness in a way that Oh Yeah simply can't. If we were voting on movies, there is no question that Ferris would run away with this thing. However, the songs tell a different story.

Sorry, I should say that I assumed the reply was from Keith here -- I should have said "the way the hosts did." :)
No, yeah, that was 100% Keith.
The little synth that could! Go, Axel!

No way, I'm campaigning for Axel F to take those synths to the finals!! :)

But doesn't its uniqueness underline its status as something that could only exist in that time and place?
Excellent point, with "avantgarde," Deni! And of course I agree with you when your vote aligns with mine! Suck it, Joe!

And you will almost certainly see Pet Shop Boys on side B!
You may see "Top Gun Anthem" on Side B--under Steve Stevens (to try to circumvent the "one artist, one song" rule)!
This one is easy, As F is more 80s and a much better song
We should have you do the podcast. You are much more concise than we are!🤣
But that would be boring A F 😜

Well said John!
