8/9 match up is NOT going to be close. Oh, Sheila will run away with it.

Never heard of Here Comes Your Man, so...

Life in a Northern Town is one of my favorite late 80's songs. Experiential type situation.

Love that Edie Brickell song...should have made it instead of the Pixies.

Take Me Home Tonight definitely should have made it, even over Edie.

Don't diss Hysteria...one of my favorite albums. So much prejudice against the hair metal bands. Snobbery! lol

Sorry, also love Here I Go Again...I wanted to be Tawny Kitaen in that video. lol. I still belt that shit out in the car when it comes on.

Hi, Meg!!

No diss intended on Hysteria...I had that album, but they spent YEARS tweaking every note, obsessively adding layers and layers and layers, and adding tons of effects. I have never heard of or seen any other production that detail-oriented anywhere else! So that's what I meant by "overproduced." It does sound like a negative word, I admit that. But they did get a sound nobody had ever heard from that work, and like 9 hit singles!

Piggybacking off of that, my take towards hair metal is more shame than snobbery, as you will hear on a future show, I did a metal radio show in college, so I know it all very very well, have been to more than my share of concerts in that genre, and am still recovering from having it looked down on so hard! 😂 I was not much for saying "this music sucks and this music doesn't," I was more of a "this SONG sucks, and this one doesn't." I can also say there were some extremely talented musicians doing metal, but some really shitty ones got famous also, which I think is true across genres.

Don't Disturb This Groove was a top 5 hit for a month...somehow I knew it very very well. Oh Sheila was one or two chart places higher, I think(listen to the show when we do it to find out) but (my opinion) it copied Prince's sound so well, that people remember it more and I feel like it maybe usurped some of the preexisting goodwill we had toward Prince (I think that may be why I like the song?)? But regardless of LIKE, remember to think which is more 80s. Give DDTG a fair listen before you smash the vote button! 😁

Thanks for the Eddie Money love. I had him in there, thought that song was pretty 80s, but I can also admit he probably wasn't gonna win much.

Appreciate you listening!

I thought Oh Sheila was a Prince song for a while, actually, I'm ashamed to admit.

I'm a little bummed that "Take Me Home Tonight" was going to make the cut! Especially since my coworker was literally just telling me the story about how his wife was named (Roni) after Ronnie Spector when her parents heard the song on the way to the hospital when she was born. (And I haven't been able to get it out of my head since.)

Also, I think this is the first time I've seen a song that I'd cross the room to turn it off: She Drives Me Crazy. Didn't like it the first million times I heard it in the 80's, don't like it now. The roller rink in Kent sure loved it though....

I am also bummed about the loss of Eddie Money. And while you will see how I feel about "She Drives Me Crazy," the 80s-ness of it is hard to deny! --K

I really have no memory of Don't Disturb This Groove. I mean, none at all, doesn't sound even the slightest familiar.

The odd thing about The Breakfast Club is I remember them, but I couldn't have named this as their song, and if you had played that song for me and asked me who it was I wouldn't have been able to tell you. I think I've forgotten what it sounds like already. The only thing I remember about that band is that Madonna had been a member before she was famous and before they had this sorta hit. And that is the most interesting thing about them.

Small piece of trivia, Amanda Kramer was a member of Information Society during this era, she's now a member of The Psychedelic Furs and I got to see her jamming on the keys on Sunday night. Lots of cross-over members among quite a few of the bands from this era.

I think Mr. Mister could be the sleeper favorite here. That is a great song, no matter that the guys looked like preppy frat boys.

I'd say Edie Brickell and The Hooters should have been in there over a couple of songs in this bracket.

And what technicality are you using to get Life in a Northern Town on the side B bracket when it was from 1985?

Deni!

It's crazy that Madonna was a drummer in a band nobody ever heard of that would go on to be a one-hit wonder without her. Despite being a big hit in 1987, the band is so obscure that it's hard to even find someone talking about the song, had to use Casey Kasem!

I did not know about the Information Society/Psychedlic Furs crossover at all! That's really cool. Looks like the Furs put on a killer show!

"Broken Wings" could definitely be a sleeper and stalk its way to a few upsets, I know I am big on the 80s vibe of that one. "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" is another one that's super-80s. I guess we will see how it plays out!

I really loved The Hooters' "Nervous Night" album, my favorite track was not released as a single, the nostalgic "South Ferry Road." But that album had 4 pretty decent sized hits on it, with "And We Danced," "All You Zombies," "Day by Day," and "Where Do the Children Go?" The title track may have been released also, don't recall.

Regarding "Life in a Northern Town," we kind of addressed this problem in S2E1, where we acknowledged imperfections in our process. By looking at chart results, you see a song in 1986, think it's off limits, don't pick it. Then you get to Side B, go to pick it, and then find out it was actually released in 1985. 🤦‍♂️ So it's 100% our fault, and there are a half dozen songs that fell in this crack, and I think 3 of them made it in this season.

Thanks as always for your 'Toids and participation!

Oh right, I forgot that she was the drummer. Weird, because I don't recall her ever playing an instrument during her solo career. Maybe she has, I've never been to one of her shows. But it's hard to imagine her behind the kit.

Hey guys! I Hope everything's fine with Joe's family. This is a great bracket, I'm pleasantly surprised to see The Bangles at the top of the rankings. Also, I always assumed that Here comes your man was a 90's song, so it's great to see them here. Can´t wait to start voting!

What are your thoughts on the rest of the field? Do you have a favorite song of these? Any that you are unfamiliar with in Argentina 🇦🇷??

Many of the songs were really popular: Alive and Kicking (It's great you guys gave SM another shot!), Broken Wings, What's On Your Mind, Life in a Northern Town, She Drives Me Crazy (My favourite!). I didn´t know Oh Sheila and Right on Track, and, though I'm familiar with Living Colour, I don´t think I've heard that song before. Also... I thought Milli Vanilli was going to be in this bracket!

Milli Vanilli is hard to justify as a "Band"! Then again, given their lip-sync history, it's hard to classify them as "Singers" either! 😂 We shall see if they make it into this tournament! 😁

Thanks for the breakdown of the region! Excited to get started!!

What am I looking at here? The actual 10 people behind the Milli Vanilli sound? They toured apart from Rob and Fab after the lip sync scandal?

I don't know if they ever got on tour, but these guys showed up at some point after the scandal , to very little success. I guess people preferred Rob and Fab, despite their lack of vocal talent!

Dr. Janet, I know 3 of your suggested "fringe" songs made my list, I can guarantee you that 1 or maybe 2 of them made another region? I don't have them memorized, unfortunately!

Regarding the Metal Region mini-game... we haven't picked that but I am struggling with whether Van Halen (and maybe GnR)-- too transcendent? Scorpions--too mainstream "rock" to be considered a hair band? Hmmmmm....

We are probably going to pick that bracket in the next couple weeks, so you have me thinking!
