Christ. You guys need a cold shower? My ex-husband was hot for The Hoff, also. I still hate her. lol. Go Wang Chung.

I think we all know what your "experiential" memories are of Susannah Hoff. Make sure the bathroom door is locked. lmao

Factoid: Wang Chung’s Dance Hall Days was featured briefly in Bachelor Party during the scene in the strip club.

😂 It was innocent, I swear! 😂

Did not remember DHD in Bachelor Party, weird coincidence, because we talked about my own bachelor party in this episode! Good 'Toid! I wonder what distracted me from noticing the song in that scene? 🤔

::Puts on Johnny Carson's Karnak hat:: "Bang/Chung" ::opens envelope:: "Maury Povich's favorite pastime." Heyoooooo! (Sorry.) Anyway, my vote is Bangles, although I think Mssrs. Chung deserved better than a 16-seed, especially given some of the other tunes in this bracket.

Nice Karnak bit 😂

It's like we need to crowdsource the seeding, right? Which is what we are angling toward for the Legends Bracket...hopefully that will come to fruition!

I gotta go Bangles here. Not because of any kind of childhood crush on Susanna Hoffs (kind feel like I missed the boat on that though, listening to this episode...thanks for that scenic route through teenage boys-ville 🤣) -- but because I'm 100% certain I had a dance routine to many of their songs. No, not a real dance routine, like the kind you make up at slumber parties that are super literal.

I also totally thought Wang Chung was "cool on Christ." (Like -- I was today years old when I learned that it was craze.) But I thought it just meant that they were down with what Jesus stood for? I guess? And they were on solid ground with whatever other worldly being might be out there, because they're good people? Not that they were religious zealots or anything. It's possible I thought too much about what that misheard line could mean.

You Hoffsed while singing into a hairbrush, didn't you? 😂

And CAN one ever think too much about lyrics? I think not!

Yeah, I am hearing from a lot of folks they also thought "Christ," which is fine if that's your thing, but to me, it always seemed like a non-sequitur, you know? We are talking about Dance Hall Days and all of a sudden the name of a religious figure pops up?

Oh man, The Bangles are really a story about what could have been. They were forced by their record label to be a different band than what they were. They were a part of the L.A. scene of bands that loved 60s rock with a psychedelic influence, stuff that was not at all popular at the time. The main bands were The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade and The Three O'clock (originally called The Salvation Army but after the threat of a lawsuit...). Prince himself was said to be a fan of this scene and it is supposedly the reason for him naming his place Paisley Park. Leading of course to him giving them Manic Monday.

But listen to that first Bangle album, it fucking rips. The track Hero Take A Fall is just hot, and should have been a hit. The later stuff was much more polished sounding, and they had a song like Egyptian forced on them. A track they didn't really want to record and don't really like.

I would have liked to see what they would have done if left to their own devices. They probably would have sold fewer records, likely to have had a career more like what happened to Dream Syndicate - well respected and loved by a loyal following, but not chart-toppers.

Robyn Hitchcock wrote a song for The Bangles to record but they never did. He ended up doing Balloon Man himself and it turned out to be one of his bigger "hits" for lack of a better word. I don't think it charted but it was on MTV's 120 Minutes in heavy rotation. I would have loved to hear a Bangles version. I'm not sure if they turned it down, they never heard it, or if the record label said no.

I realized I made reference to Prince naming his studio after that scene in L.A. without actually mentioning that the group of bands were referred to as the Paisley Underground.

Something really cool that came out on Record Store Day in 2018 was a double vinyl set called 3x4. The four main bands from the Paisley Underground covered on another's songs. Each side had three tracks by one of the bands covered by the other three bands.

The Bangles' version of The Dream Syndicate's That's What You Always Say is especially good. And The Dream Syndicate's cover of The Bangles' Hero Takes A Fall is awesome but also great because the song was written about Steve Wynn, the leader of The Dream Syndicate, because after they were the first band in the scene to get a major label deal he started acting like a big shot asshole. He has admitted in later years it was true. (I've met him several times, he is super sweet and always so nice, so it's hard to imagine he was once like that). So he sings the song that is calling him out for being a dick.

This doesn't sound like the "commercially viable" Bangles at all. Like the guitar sound on this track. And I love the story about Steve Wynn singing about himself being an asshole! 😂 Thanks, Deni! --Keith

Talking about teenage objectifying of the lovely Ms. Hoffs, I'm surprised you didn't mention the movie The Allnighter (or did you? I was listening at work so could have missed it) in which she stars. And the awesome scene with her dancing in her underwear. Oddly, written and directed by her own mother. Terrible movie, but with it having Susanna Hoffs in her underwear or a bikini or skimpy clothes much of the time, this teenager loved it and saw it many times.

I think so, I don't remember much about the plot. They were all students at a college on the west coast, the guys were all bros who surfed instead of going to class. I think. I think there was a sex scene with Hoffs as well, and that means a guy was being directed to get down and dirty with Hoffs by her mother.

Shame on you, Keith! How dare you rank The Bangles at n 1, only to vote for Wang Chung! It was a close call for me, until I heard Everybody Stay Safe Tonight. That was too much to handle... Anyways, both songs are super fun and make for a great matchup. I wish I could say the same for the next matchup! (Ready what? The system who?)

I rated these two right next to each other, and the Bangles probably deserve the win more, for being a huge 80s presence, but even though I like the Bangles more, “Everybody Have Fun” is just so 80s! I am having a tough time voting against my favorite songs (see also: “In Your Eyes”) this season! —K. You stay safe, now, Alejandro!
