I'm also going for Leslie on this one, mostly because I was a junior producer on a radio show in the late 80s and we played a lot of miss Taylor Dayne. But let's get to what's really important... I'm really excited about the upcoming Milli Vanilli episode!

As much as I like HoJo, Leslie's song is just so so so 80s in style, tone, and production. So I am with you on this one. We just did Milli Vanilli last night, and I hope it is as fun to listen to as it was to record! --K

Howard is not one of those guys I have any sort of bigger love for his deep cuts over his hits. He's one of those guys whose singles are his best songs. You mentioned Everlasting Love, that's my favorite song of his. His first couple of singles are great, New Song and What is Love, thue were hits in the UK but not here.

I will check out these other two tunes you mentioned, thanks! --Keith

Why isn't there more talk about Pie Rankings here? My top are:

1. Chocolate pudding pie with graham cracker crust (yes I'm basic, so?)

2. A very specific blueberry pie I had from a friend's wedding a few years ago that I still think about to this day, but I don't know what bakery it came from so I'll probably never get to have it again...

3. My dad's apple pie

4. Banana cream pie

5. McDonald's apple pie

6. Most other pies, including lemon meringue, pistachio pudding pie, pecan pie and chess pie (these last two are good but way too sweet to have much -- they should come in Whitman's Sampler-sized slices)

7. Pumpkin pie -- which is not to say I dislike pumpkin pie, I'd just pick it last if I had other choices

So this discussion was unscripted, and upon reflection, I would add the pie used to hit Bret Naylor in the back in the No Ticket film, "NayFK"

I would probably also add a French Silk pie to my list? Your list is quite impressive, though it contains 5 pies my super-tasting tongue won't allow! 🤣

Question: cheesecake is pie-like and nothing like cake, and would be #1 on my list if ruled a pie. What say you?

Regarding your pie #2, can't you just ask the friend where the pie came from?

Hahaha, that SPECIFIC pie, or just those Hostess (?) hand-held pies?

Ooh, French Silk is a good call, haven't had one in probably decades but now I want one.

At the risk of getting into is-a-hot-dog-a-sandwich territory, I think cheesecake is more of a pie -- filling in a crust, right? If your cake has a crust, you've done something wrong. Brownies are more of a cake than cheese"cake" is. So I'd rule that cheesecake can occupy your #1 spot on a pies list. I assume savory pies (chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie) are a no-go for you though? (I like them but they'd go below most sweet pies on my list.)

#2 is my friend's sister (I was the lucky recipient of leftovers from friend's house), so I haven't seen her to ask, but I'll try to remember next time.

I've now contributed more intelligent thought to a pie discussion than any music discussion I've commented on here. 🤣

Thank you for the discourse on pie!🥧 Cheesecake is my #1, then!!

I do love the handheld pies, especially Hostess! 😋

Meat pies are a HARD no-go. I can't even LOOK at them 😂!!

I love Howard Jones, lots of 80s and 90s memories probably associated with that song, but all the late-80s dance parties probably included Taylor Dane, and her big-haired friends -- definitely not my favorite, but totally 80s. Easy choice.

Yes, HoJo is the better artist, and while he looked and sounded 80s, I think he succeeds in any decade, whereas Taylor was more a product of the moment.

This region just continues to be full of the people I hated from the 80s. Taylor Dayne was just the worst. She had exactly one good song, I'll Be Your Shelter. (She's like Taylor Swift that way, one good song and the rest is complete shit).

Howard Jones is awesome. I saw him live back in 1989 and he was amazing. I was only at the show to see the opener, Midge Ure, but Jones blew me away.

But I fully expect to have to hear Taylor Dayne the next round. Blech.

I *think* we have some treats for you in Foreigners, but it's hard to say. I had forgotten about the Dayne "Shelter" song!

I don't know enough about Taylor Swift to agree or disagree with you, but I am curious to know what her one good song is, in your opinion?

Midge Ure is a name I have seen before but I don't associate a song with the name? I will Google, but anything you think I would have heard?

The other Taylor's one good song is All Too Well. End of list.

Midge Ure's name you would know as the co-songwriter of Do They Know It's Christmas. He was in an early new wave band called Ultravox that was fairly big in the UK but I don't think they ever charted in the US. Vienna would probably be their most well known song.

Definitely more known in the UK. His Answers to Nothing album got some notice in the US, the single Dear God (different than the XTC song) was on 120 Minutes a lot. The album also has a duet with Kate Bush. That's the tour I saw of his, when he opened for Howard. The only time I saw either of them.

I love how you said Howard Jones just made the cut for side B, like you guys are actually following some sort of hard rule you set.

The 80s-est's avatar

I think he's talking about following the TIME rule because we keep hitting 1985 songs 😂

Keith followed that rule. I indulged repeated artists as much as I goddamn wanted.

I really love both of these songs, but I have to go with Taylor. I love her voice, so powerful and passionate! And, this song is so much fun to sing in the car! Rocking out, dancing, waving my arms...you know, like you're supposed to do while you're driving. :)

And, for anyone who doesn't know this, my brother is the Pie King. King of Pies. Pie Dude. Perfect Crust Guy. He mocks me for using store-bought crusts. Mocks me cruelly. lmao. But, seriously, he makes great pies. Love you, baby bro.

Dude, I do not remember wallowing to this particular song. Ugh. Your listeners no doubt picture me as some sad little puddle of goo. Yeah, this would have been my senior year, but I honestly don't remember which guy that would have been. Maybe one of the Todds. Lol

Aw, thanks, guys. I love both of you guys, too!

I think that's the purpose of Taylor Dayne songs: to get you moving and psyched. Not to change your life or win awards.

How many Todds were there? 😂
