Interesting question if Who's Johnny? is a novelty song. When I think of 80s novelty songs, ones like The Curly Shuffle and Pac-Man Fever come to mind. Who's Johnny does sound like one, but what exactly is the definition?
Man, Berlin v DeBarge is tough. The former is definitely more iconic 80s but sound-wise could be form another era. But the latter could not be from any other decade. So, I think I'm voting DeBarge despite just fucking hating it.
I can't believe that I Still Believe wasn't released as a single. I have heard that song so many times. I don't own it and I only once watched about 10 minutes of The Lost Boys (hated it and turned it off), so I'm not sure why I k ow it so well.
Both I Still Believe and Glory of Love are objectively bad, yet I kind of like them, probably for that reason. Like the way Keith likes Rad or I like Grease 2. Vote goes to Cetera because it is so damn melodramatic. And it is Peter Cetera.
I really struggled with the novelty aspect of it., but you're right, it's not strictly novelty, but I think it's novelty-adjacent!
And I can completely see the case for voting DeBarge here, as I think I may have stated during the show.
Objectively bad songs, when consumed at a certain age...something chemical in the developing brain happens, and here we are signing along to them anyway. I'm glad to hear that this happens even to a serious music lover like you, Deni!😁. Makes me SLIGHTLY less embarrassed to admit it myself! --Keith

I think the "Cetera of it all" has a separate kind of 80s-ness that people remember. Capello won't go out without an oiled-up fight, though! --K
