Completely off-topic shout-out to Keith, who was kind enough to hop on a video chat to walk my kid through a pre-calculus problem that was too much for my elementary-level math brain. This guy is a mensch.
Oh the sweet sweet sound of The Promise. Can close my eyes when that's on and see myself on the dance floor, almost swimming in the liquid gold of that tune. And Breakout is just another classic, soulful 80s dream.
I agree with the argument that The Final Countdown has transcended the 80s; I don't immediately think back to the 80s when I hear it, rather it is the sports-hype cliche song of all time. The Promise gets my vote because it does bring back the 80s memories...
Tougher call on the second matchup. Breakout has a lot of 80s-production to it, but it feels like a gimmick, and Bryan Adams (despite producing songs that everyone seems to love to hate) was everywhere in the 80s. Nevertheless, I'm going to have to go with Breakout here.
I definitely don't fully hate Bryan Adams the way Joe would seem to. Love "Summer of '69," "Cuts Like a Knife," and a couple others. Don't love the Robin Hood song of his. But I do really get strong 80s vibe from "The Promise" and "Breakout"! Great choices! --Keith
I think that we're dealing with a dark horse in here! "The promise" is catchy, synthy, and tender yet commanding! I can see it going far into the tournament. And, since there's no Serú Girán or Los Abuelos de la Nada in the bracket, I'll have to go with Swing Out Sister. My wife Mónica went for Bryan Adams & co, which is perfecty understandable.

Man, "The Promise" just floods me with 80s hormones when that chorus hits! I am glad that Mónica is voting!!
