No, I didn't have the soundtrack. And, I actually don't really like "She's Like the Wind," despite the great sax. I love me some Swayze in movies, but he couldn't sing. He should have stayed in his lane. RIP, dude.
๐ Smooth moves! This is a clip from a TV show that ran for almost two decades called "Feliz domingo para la juventud", it aired on sundays. The premise of the show was that high school seniors would participate in a series of challenges (dancing, answering general culture questions, acting, etc...) in order to win a trip to Bariloche, a beautiful city in the patagonia, at the end of their senior year. I donยดt know if these kids won, though!
Jennifer Warnes also performed vocals with Cohen on a few of his albums, very prominently on Various Positions, which is the album that introduced the world to Hallelujah. The closing track is one of my favorites, If It Be Your Will. That song is actually used in a scene in Pump Up The Volume, but not on the soundtrack itself.
I hated these songs and the movie when I was 17 which tracked with my post-punk/new wave/goth self-image. I was also working in the only video store in Lake Zurich, IL when it came out on video and all the Dirty Dancing fans annoyed me. Like REALLY annoyed me. Also, my senior prom in 1988 had as it's theme - like probably thousands of other high schools in America that year - wait for it, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." It could not be the more perfect thing to hate.
But I've softened on The Time of My Life over the years. It's a pretty perfectly crafted pop song with a good beat and gets bigger and bigger until it's a full on celebration in song. And I mean, come on, Bill Medley.
I've come to appreciate the movie a lot over the years too, there is lot more to it than on first glance (pro-choice message for starters). And it has the great Jerry Orbach.
She's Like the Wind is not one I've come around on. I appreciate the effort from Swayze, and fact he even wrote the thing, but it is just not good. Paint by numbers ballad-making.
I actually own the soundtracks - remember, it did so well they rushed out "More Dirty Dancing" that had a bunch of the (mostly) old songs left off the first soundtrack. There were some great old numbers introduced to a new generation with that movie.
My favorite song on the soundtrack was the great band The Blow Monkey's cover of You Don't Own Me.
I think this one goes to Bill and Jennifer, it's a pretty big marker for the year 1987 and it probably should have been seeded higher.
Agreed on the Swayze singing. As I said in the ep, it just sounds like an actor with an untrained singing voice. Like, seriously, if I tried to sing and release a pop song, it would be at about the same level.

Thanks for letting us know!!
"Stay in your lane!" ๐
I went time, just cause it's funkier, and yeah, the singing is not good on the other one. Don't really like either, despite the unprotected sax ๐คญ
"Unprotected Sax" is the name of my Wham! cover band! ๐ท ๐คฃ ๐คฃ

Dirty Dancing is a great movie! My vote goes to "(I've had) the time o my life", and the reason is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktNtlk4Qago
Incredible! It must have taken you weeks to learn those moves! And then you executed the life perfectly on national TV? Wow! ๐คฉ
๐ This was actually really good, joking aside...was this a daytime talk show?

If It Be Your Will is a great song.
Warnes doing vocals on Cohen's albums=great.
Warnes doing covers of Cohen's songs=not my jam.

Can report that I have now listened to Warnes cover of Leonard Cohenโs โFamous Blue Raincoatโ and I DID NOT care for it. Nope.
