Sigh, just another contest where strong, female candidates get the shaft by the patriarchy…
As much as I want to protest vote for Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth because that’s my 80s, I went with Pure Energy. I know Joe said The Promise had a Gen X feel to it and I think that’s it to me — BOTH of the finalists are Gen X to me, but not necessarily 80s, if that makes sense. But out of the two, Pure Energy says 80s more to me.
Final thoughts: everyone knows the quintessential Very Special Episode is the Punky Brewster where her friend hides in the old fridge and almost dies.
When side B started and I learned that IS was in the race, I just knew that "What's on your mind" would make it to the finals. But, despite having heard that song a zillion times in the 80s and kind of loving it, the novelty and awesomeness of "The Promise" gets my final vote. It's been great discovering a new and wonderful song through this podcast, and it'd be awesome if it wins the whole thing (Foreigners winning once again would be great too!) It's a non brainer for Mónica and me: Taylor for the bronze and When in Rome for the gold!
It's impossible to really argue against either of your choices, because even though this is not the Final Four we envisioned, these four songs are extremely 80s. Speaking of Foreigners making things better on this podcast, Joe and I absolutely love that you and your family are having fun along with us from afar! We are excited to prepare for and bring you the Legends Bracket in Season 3! Thanks so much for always listening and participating! --Keith
I'll try to convince some of my friends to follow the Legends Bracket! (If Madonna and Phil collins are in the mix, they'll be interested!) Can´t wait for that show to start. For me, this has also been a great way to listen to American English and reconnect with the accent! I have found myself more than once repeating some words and lines while listening to the show in the car, just for practice! 😃Thank you guys for that!
Listening to the show this morning, I picked up on the British-ness of the lead singer in What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy). Comes out more in the verses, maybe?
FYI - The "woman" in Information Society is Amanda Kramer, a killer keyboardist who has been a member of Psychedelic Furs for over 20 years. So she landed on her feet in a much better band.
I can't believe I have to do this, but I'm voting for Pure Energy, a song I hate. It was just a much bigger song. I can't vote for The Promise even though I love it. It just isn't big enough or 80's enough to win the whole bracket. Pure Energy is just sooooo 80's. ugh.
This is not close at all for me. How the hell did Information Society even get here? Even if you like this song (I do not) I don't see the argument at all for it being emblematic of the 80s. But at least I didn't have to listed to that shitty Taylor Dane again.
The Promise by a mile here. (Even though the real winner should be Just Like Heaven)

Oh man, there's a fridge suffocation episode! AWESOME!

Now THAT would be great to hear audio of you in the car practicing English! 😂
With your help, Joe and I could try to do an entire episode in Spanish! THAT would also be worth listening to! 😝
Let's do it! I'm totally up for it! 😃And we'll do it live, fuck it!
I think that would alienate a whole more people than it would entice. My mangling of the Spanish language could start international incidents.
Don't sell yourself short, Joe! I heard you pronnounce "Charly García" and it was impeccable!

Also, in a Psychedelic Furs video that you shared, I remember thinking she was great... great 'TOID to share with us for the final!
Does she play violin? I ask because in the video, she plays a giant cardboard one!
Hmmm....that I do not know. I have seen the Furs a few times since she has been with them and I have never seen a violin.

That's kind of the deal for me, though I don't HATE the song like you and Deni do.

This one is soooooooo close! I would be OK with any of them.
Did you flip a coin? 😂
No, I just closed my eyes and clicked :)
