Is this the first time you've included a cover song where the original was also from the 80s? The Call's version wasn't even cold yet before this version came out the next year. That has to be one of the quickest anyone has ever put out a cover of a song. (The fastest has to be All Along the Watchtower, Jimi put his version out before Dylan's original was released)
There was one cover early in the first side, I believe Animotion's "Obsession" was a 1984 cover of a Michal DesBarres song from 1983. And in that case also, I had been unaware it was a cover song until we read a little about it.
So, I'm pretty sure I never heard these back in the day, or I don't remember them at least. Probably because I didn't see Lost Boys. I tried to watch it a couple of times but it bored me to tears in a few minutes and anything with those two Coreys always annoyed me (except for when Feldman was in Stand By Me, which is freaking brilliant from beginning to end).
I know The Call's version of I Still Believe. I don't fully understand why Capello's version would be in the group of 64 rather than The Call's. The Call original actually got a decent amount of radio play back in the day. Mostly on the so-called album-oriented stations. I don't love it and I don't hate it, but The Call was a pretty good 80s rock band overall. Though, a niche act I suppose. But I'd guess way more people would know the original version over this one.
The only The Call song that I knew of was "Let the Day Begin." I think the reason Joe and I knew this one in is entirely because it was in a big movie, but also neither he nor I was aware this was a cover version until we did this show.
So I am wondering--coming from a place of not knowing these songs very well or at all, which one did you settle on?
I went with I Still Believe because I know The Call's version really well, so I actually remember it from the 80s. Cry, Little Sister doesn't strike me as much of a song.
The funny thing is, I thought it was going to be The Call song until I saw the artist name. I assumed then it was going to be a completely different song just with a similar title. (Like how Katy Perry has a song called I Kissed a Girl that is not a cover of the Jill Sobule song)
I would say that more people know this version. As we said in the ep, the scene where the guy sings this has stayed in a lot of people's heads over the years.
I get that this movie was far more significant for some than others, and unfortunately I guess I'm one of those "others" despite having seen and sort of liking the movie at the time it came out. Meh. None of the music stood out at the time, and I don't remember either of these now. Why are we talking about these songs? This is totally you, Keith and Joe, we're just along for the ride....
This is a good point, we may have overestimated the popularity of this... I thought for sure these were both top 40 hits, due to my clear memory of both. And I actually had "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)" by Lou Gramm ranked higher than "Cry, Little Sister," (which I didn't rank), but that probably didn't chart, either.
So my question for you, Chris, is the same as I had for Deni above: If you don't know either of them, based on one listen, who are you voting for?
Thank you so much for listening! Hope to see you soon again in real life!
Still love this movie, although I could do without the Coreys. Both super annoying. Was I at the Pizza Hut when we sang "Oatsbusters," because I do NOT remember that. lol
This is a tough one. "I Still Believe" is more 80's, but I have to go with "Cry Little Sister" just because it's a better song and I can just picture myself listening to it while I read my Anne Rice novels (which I actually didn't do until the early 90's, but whatever).
I can't remember if I said this in the show, but the only The Call song I knew was "Let the Day Begin." I will go give this a listen now. Wow, I like this other stuff much more than "Let the Day Begin"! It doesn't even sound like the same band? LtDB isn't bad, but sounds like it belongs in the opening montage of a movie or in a Maxwell House commercial. The rest of this stuff sounds much more... "college radio," for lack of a better term? --Keith

Scratch that last line, I'm wrong about the release order of Watchtower versions. It was like 6 months after Dylan's came out.

I remember enjoying the movie in the 80s, but I didn´t recall the songs until I heard them again. The garlic-infused body oil decided my vote!
Tim Capello is an assault on the senses, isn't he? 🤣 🧄
He's a force to be reckoned with!

respectfully disagree.. this movie and these songs earned their place in history.
if I could enthusiastically vote for both songs, I would ;)
Welcome, Ryan! Since you could only vote for one, which did you choose? "@protogoth" kills, btw. --Keith

Without enthusiasm I went with Cry, Little Sister as being a bit more 80s-est.

I think *everyone* could do without the Coreys. 🤣 --K
You absolutely were at the Pizza Hut. We went to the game with Doug.
