I think I have a philosophical difference in how you decided to pick the artists, too much reliance on Billboard charts. (I'm much too lazy to start a podcast, but not so lazy I can't tell people how they do theirs wrong)

You are doing this podcast in 2025, not in early 1990 when the decade has just ended. There is a lot of time to see the lasting power of music from the time period. Like you said, everyone knows Should I Stay or Should I Go despite it not cracking the top 40.

The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure (especially them), New Order, The Clash; these bands have a much longer lasting legacy and bigger cultural impact than many of your legends (especially Toto and Seger) I think I'd include AC/DC in that too, even though not my thing. I also can't believe Steve Winwood didn't make it. That's a monster legend to leave out.

I'll tease Keith a little bit for his trying to name examples of 80s B-52's songs by naming one from the 70s and another that was an REM song with a Kate Pierson (and no other members of B-52's) guest vocal from 1991.

But I will defend his Eddie Money inclusion.

hahahaha well, I obviously didn't put the B52’s on my list… is “Roam” B52s? Thought of that one later! 😂

Roam is B-52's, yes. Same album as Love Shack. Also on that record my favorite song Deadbeat Club, which is about the Athens scene in the late 70s and early 80s.

Rock Lobster was recorded in my hometown of Stone Mountain GA.

Great hearing you once again, Keith & Joe! Too bad Depeche mode didn´t make it, but we'll always have Bob Seger. Steve Winwood will also be missed, specially since his was the first concert I attended in the US, specifically in Columbus, Ohio!

I love that you saw a concert here in Ohio! What a strange and beautiful coincidence!

I got to spend a month in Columbus, Ohio, in 1991, and it was awesome! It was my first american experience. I remember watching Twin Peaks on ABC and listening to REM on the radio, and of course, going to the Winwood concert!

The loud guffaws at Toto makes me think they are probably the 16 seed.

Can neither confirm nor deny their rank, but Toto was bigger than I thought in the decade, and the guffaw for me was mostly due to one of the songs I nominated secretly (to me) having Michael McDonald tucked away on background vocals! 😂 When we were doing nominations, we listened to snippets, and I started "McDonalding" and saying "this bit sounds like McD" and then we found out it actually was him! 😂

Toto rules! the real counudrum here is having to choose between Pamela and Africa. For quite some time I thought "Toto" was a solo artist and not a band.

It is going to keep a smile on my face all day that there could be a guy out there named Toto.

Haha! There are quite a few guys that go by the name of "Toto" in South America, since it's short for "Tomás".

Another fellow "Pamela" fan! Tough choices must be made. Yes, "Africa" is a monster hit, but Pamela has a very 80s sound! Let me know what you do, I haven't voted on that one yet!
