Keith with twice the caffeine??? The mind reels. Like, a lot. It reels a lot.

For those of you who are curious, I have witnessed Keith with twice the caffeine. He eventually reached a state where he vibrated so quickly that his outline actually became fuzzy and his voice sped up so he sounded like Alvin the chipmunk 🤣. For anyone who needs proof that perpetual motion exists, here it is (at least until the caffeine wore off).

Dude I remember almost getting flattened in the name of Van Halen. What sucked about the whole experience is that at the last minute they decided to make it a lottery instead of the first in line. Luckily, we somehow managed to get the FIRST TICKET CALLED, so we were still able to score some excellent seats. It was only like $200 for 8 nearly front row pavilion seats at Blossom. Now it is probably more than that for one seat in a section where you need supplemental oxygen...

As for the vote, you cannot deny (for better or worse) the fact that DD helped define typical 80s music. Elvis Costello may have also been influential, but he was not at the forefront of 80s culture. I am still trying to decide how Elvis is considered a legend, but someone like the Cars was not?? At any rate, going for DD on this one.

BTW Keith, I am on a 31 year streak... and only one time in the past 39 years (back in 1994).

This is awesome, jumping in to say The Cars are definitely IN the Legends bracket! More later!

Those were great seats! And I can confirm that good seats in the front of the pavilion are now much more than $200 per seat!

Now how Elvis got in is that when we compared Legends, and we had something like 44 in common, and those got averaged together... then with the 20 remaining slots, we each got 10 of our remaining 20 choices in. So someone for me that made it during that part was Miami Sound Machine. And someone that made it for Joe during that part was Elvis Costello. But I am pretty sure we BOTH voted The Cars in. But bands like .38 Special and Loverboy did NOT make it in during my cuts, and that's probably fine, they weren't gonna win it all... but yeah, Joe and I had different experiences and different tastes, hence the field being more varied than if you and I were doing it. Any combination of two people picking would give you a whole different season! Thanks for listening, John! --KGM

I did in fact go with Elvis. Despite the pretty boys having more hits, Elvis has a more significant cultural legacy than Duran Duran.

I'm disappointed you didn't have a more in-depth conversation about the misogyny and objectification in Duran Duran's early videos. Some of that shit was really fucked up.

I think it's because I was completely unaware of the early videos. I know you commented once about Girls on Film being pretty raunchy, and I watched a little of it after your comment, but then have since forgotten about it!

I was pretty unfamiliar with Elvis Costello, but as huge as Duran Duran was, I was never very into them. Their songs just don’t do much for me. Kind of gimmicky. So, these guys are both basically “meh” for me, as opposed to the last episode. Well, from the sublime to the ridiculous. But, you can’t deny the Uber-80’s-ness of DD. So, there you go. Sigh

For me it was about familiarity and impact. And for me, I didn't really know any Elvis Costello until the 90s. And even then, I can name 4 songs. Not saying DD are better musicians or anything of that nature, but most 80s,

definitely, without question.

One of the many great things about following this podcast is discovering great songs. I didn´t know about "Verónica" and I loved the song and the video. Sir Paul MC is a genius and you can feel his influence on this song. But DD are 80's legends and get my vote...

Have a great weekend! Next Monday is a National Holiday in Argentina, so I'll think I'll enjoy the Wonder / Estefan duel over a relaxed brunch!
