By coincidence, my Substack newsletter today from former Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn included this piece, that was essentially about the ridiculousness of "influencer" culture (he was criticizing Chicago Sky player Angel Reese):
"We are truly in an age when — to cite a quote often attributed to David Lee Roth, former frontman of the band Van Halen — an ounce of image is worth a pound of performance."
I have always loved Van Halen, although I prefer "Panama" to "Jump." And, yes, I still loved them as Van Hagar. Probably their best stuff is late 70's-early 80's when they really rocked out. "And the Cradle Will Rock" is one of my favorite songs. "Have you seen Junior's grades?"
But, 5150 is the one that I know ALL the songs from. Summer of 1986 after I graduated, me and a couple of girlfriends went on a "camping" trip and played this over and over and over. We even had arm motions for "Love Walks In." Don't judge, we were high. lol
Sorry, baby bro. I like Aerosmith and they are an iconic band, but Van Halen takes it for me. I remember you playing Permanent Vacation a lot, but something about Steven Tyler just annoys me.
You guys and your "problematic." But, I'll say this, the most sexist video from VH has to be "Hot for Teacher."
No one out-swaggers DLR.
Which cousin? Are you talking about Christie? I think her birthday is Dec. 23, right?
This one is pretty easy. Aerosmith could maybe be the runaway legend winners of a podcast called the 70s-est. But they got nothing on Van Halen for the 80s. Though I think that Panama is the better song off that record, and Hot For Teacher is probably even more 80s with its juvenile fantasies and objectification.
I just couldn't stand Aerosmith's 80s output except for the beautiful melodrama storytelling Janie's Got A Gun.
The Hot for Teacher video is absolutely the one we were referring to most when we said the VH videos could get very sexist... "juvenile fantasies and objectification" is the perfect description!
And seeing one of the better rock drummers of the 80s, Alex, struggle with the simple dance steps in HfT is always amusing to me. How is he this coordinated AND this uncoordinated?? 😆
These are just ER visits of my childhood. Less emergent stuff happened frequently as well!! 😂 My poor mom! And plenty more visits as an adult 😂! My poor wife!
Apparently a weakness in the abdominal wall right where your belly button is? I apparently had intestines coming out in two different places, resulting in 2 surgeries. 🤷🏼♂️
Dude, so many things to discuss from this episode! First of all, you managed to squeeze BOTH my favourite word and favourite phrase/expression in English: "flamboyant" and "not that there's anything wrong with it"! I remember Steve Carrell saying "If I were gay, I'd be flamboyant", that cracked me up. And for the phrase, it's featured heavily on one of my favourite "Seinfield" episodes!
"Jump" is huge internationally, I mean, it's instantly recongizable even today. So my vote goes for David and Van Halen. I think the song will go quite far this season. But both Steve and David are equally flamboyant...
I just asked my 13 year old daughter and she told me that she had a Cabbage Kids doll some years ago! She's an only child and a fan of dolls, so she probably has at least one doll from each doll line! So Cabbage Kids definitely transcended the 80s and the USA frontiers!
Do you guys know "Sea Monkeys"? I think they might be more 70s than 80s, but are a clear memory of my childhood!

I have never heard this quote! Go, Diamond Dave!

That's the one.
I also like both eras of the band. (There were even a few things to like about the Gary Cherone album, "Van Halen 3", believe it or not.)
More obscure favorites from the Roth era are "Unchained," "Dead or Alive," "Little Guitars," and "Girl Gone Bad"
I need to know what these arm motions were!! 😆
Agree with you on the Hot For Teacher video, but yet I can still laugh at it! 😂
Rock on 🤘!!!

You should host the 70s-est, Deni! I'd listen.
A podcast from me would likely turn into 4-hour rants about shit that annoys me, and that would not be entertaining for anyone.
That'd be a great podcast to listen to, Deni!
Agreed!! I would help produce it!
"Next on episode 18 of the 70s-est: Part 18 of reasons why Led Zeppelin is the most overrated band of all time."

The more stories you hear from Kieth's high school days it is easier and easier to believe his stat of 18 ER visits before his 18th birthday.
Here are my 18 visits:
1&2. twice for umbilical hernias as a baby,
3. severe tonsillitis at 5,
4. broken nose at 5,
5. Decent wrist laceration(10 stitches) at 6,
6. broken neck (C-4, not displaced) at 6,
7. allergic reaction to Halloween face makeup at 7,
8. broken ribs at 8,
9. broken arm/collarbone at 8,
10. severe hand laceration (severed all tendons) at 10,
11. post-car accident check at 11,
12. shattered thumb at 13,
13. near-death anaphylaxis from bee stings at 14,
14. major concussion from bike accident at 16,
15. another broken nose at 16,
16. anaphylaxis from ChemLawn at 17,
17. broken foot at 18,
18. 106° fever (turned out to be measles) at 18.
So I guess this INCLUDES me being 18.
These are just ER visits of my childhood. Less emergent stuff happened frequently as well!! 😂 My poor mom! And plenty more visits as an adult 😂! My poor wife!
That you are alive seems to be a miracle. What the hell is an umbilical hernia? (I could just ask my physician wife I suppose)

Oh, we had Sea Monkeys here. They were a very well-known disappointment.
Just blatant robbery!
I am really surprised that those dolls did well internationally!
I saw Sea Monkey ads all the time in comic books, but I never actually got any.
"Flamboyant" is a fun English word! Glad you like it!!
