I had Records on cassette and nearly wore it out. The song is my LEAST favorite Foreigner song, but I get the rock nod for 80s legend. They weren't pretty, or flashy, just played rock. The Cars were more pop-rock and art, and a bit quirky. Andy Warhol even directed Hello Again....
I generally like Foreigner, even this song to some extent, but I love The Cars, and The Cars were just bigger and more of what the 80s was becoming and more of what I bought and listened to. (Though at one point, Mike Barnes gifted me a Foreigner Greatest Hits cassette and I listened to it plenty in the later 80s.)
Even though Foreigner was a common 80s slow-dance song, I have to go with the Cars here. Although I'm still flabbergasted over the video beating out Thriller on the awards circuit. The Thriller video is epic -- and such a huge departure from anything that had come before (even in the short time that music videos had been a thing). Watching it again, it's even more clear that the then-novel computerized image-manipulation just blinded the voters.
You're dead on with your vote and with what must have happened with the voters. The cultural phenomenon that was Thriller cannot be overstated. Nobody does the "You Might Think" dance at parties. Nobody goes as the fly version of Ric Ocasek for Halloween.
Not to hate on The Cars video. It just wasn't as important or impressive. Fun, definitely, but Thriller, as you point out, was a game-changer!
I have a strong experiential tie to Ric Ocasek! Newbury Street, Boston, 1993: I was walking leasurely with Guillermo (you know him, Keith!) and Guy Helson (you might remember him, Keith!) and we bumped into Ric Ocasek, his wife at the time, supermodel Paulina Herzigova, and their infant child. Guy and me were totally starstruck and we followed them into a Gap store. Guillermo didn´t have a clue about who they were -he still doesn't-. That was my second celebrity spotting in Boston, after having seen Wilson Phillips play at a free festival at Boston Common 🙃🤣
Regarding Foreigner, it´s the kind of band that plays quite often on local radio stations, but if I were to ask any of my Argentine friends if they know them, they wouldn´t have a clue, even if they are familiar with the songs. -Guillermo knows them, though!-
My vote goes for The Cars! Mónica couldn't care less, so I guess her vote will go to Ric and Co too.
Have a great weekend! It's gonna be F freezing in here 🥶

Julie. You mean Julie the Bitch.
Dude. She was super nice. Seriously, man.
That’s not the way I remember it. She was snotty, and she broke up with my baby brother and he was hurt. Ergo, bitch.
😂 😂 😂
Ummm.. where are the pics of 80s Keith and Joe at Cedar Point???
I know I have at least one here at my house… Assuming I can find it, with Joe’s permission, I can scan it!
Me: "Good god, I don't think it's possible that I Want To Know What Love Is could be any worse of a song."
Mariah Carey & Winona Judd: "Hold our beers."
Once again you have made me LOL, Deni! hahahahaha! Well done!

I love this story and remember both of those fine gentleman! I think that Ric lived in Boston at the time!
¡Amo esta historia y recuerdo los dos caballeros! ¡Creo que Sr. Ocasek viva en Boston a la tiempo!
I saw Green Day play for free on the Esplanade, in 1994, and it kind of turned into a riot that Jen M. and I escaped before it got bad.
Green Day in the 90s was THE shit! I'd have love to see them, even at the danger of being caught in the middle of undergrads rioting!
