You are correct, baby bro. "Against All Odds" was one of my top 3 "wallow" songs. Many tears and much blubbering.
I agree with Alejandro, what's with the Rod Stewart hate? And, Joe, I was incredibly moved when your class walked out of graduation to "Forever Young." At my graduation, we had some boring traditional instrumental crap. Never thought he was sexy, though. And definitely didn't want his body. And I'll tell him so.
Really wish "Shadows of the Night" would have been chosen. One of my favorites. Love Pat Benatar!
The Challenger disaster was Gen-X's "Where were you when you heard Kennedy was shot?" I was in the guidance office doing some work and Mrs. Kinnick came in all upset and said it exploded. It was so shocking I couldn't believe it.
I have nothing against Rod Stewart, but I feel like he was way overplayed in the late 80s. I remember once when Forever Young was playing on three radio stations at the same time!
I totally agree with Shadows of the Night. I think it is one of Pat Benatar's best songs. Incidentally, it was what was playing in my Walkman when I met Keith for the first time - that Honor's College bus ride to the Cuyahoga valley...
John-- I love that you know what song was playing when you met me! "Shadows" IS a great song, that I voted for, but the one that won is also gonna do great in the tourney, I think! And yeah, I think I was just sick of Rod Stewart, and a lot of his stuff bored me, but he doesn't really deserve my ire! 🤣
The Rod Stewart hate is out of line, and you probably won't hear it again! hahaha PROBABLY! So many folks in my class especially watched the Challenger explosion live and it was beyond belief for all of us. One of the first moments when I realize the people running that place (and every place) were just humans, too. --Keith
So as one of the guys alluded to maybe having a beef with the REM song choices...
In no way am I one of those guys who thinks only the early stuff is worthy - even though I grew up about 45 minutes from Athens - I think REM was the greatest band in the world up to about Monster. The cracks in the armor came after that. I think the two albums you chose songs off of (not three as Joe said) are all-time greats, and what those two records mean to me are immeasurable.
Document quite literally saved my life my senior year of high school. I would go home after another miserable day of school, put on my headphones and blast Document from beginning to end, and it gave me the strength to want to live another day. (I was very lucky to have been able to thank Peter Buck for that after a show one night) The Green tour is how I met my wife.
I just would have spread the love out over four albums, not just the last two of the decade. We could have seen (Don't Go Back to) Rockville and maybe Superman as voting options.
Look man, every single fact I throw out on these region previews is probably wrong; I had zero confidence that the songs were off of two albums and I thank you for correcting me, as I had absolute faith you would.
I was sitting there playing the songs off the playlist that showed they were from two albums, but didn't correct you, because I didn't want to steal Deni's thunder! 😂
I am SO glad that Document was there for you, and that you stuck around to have a great life. ❤️ I did NOT know you met your wife through the Green tour! That's SO great!
Regarding the songs, the earlier stuff that I do know (Radio Free Europe, etc.), I like. I don't know a lot of it. I do know Superman, (thanks, Michael Anderson!) and it's awesome. Don't know Rockville. But I wasn't sure other folks would know the early stuff, either, so my nominations were the popular "The One I Love" and "Stand," but I think there were a bunch of worthy nominees.
Hey guys, good show! But... How come you're doing only one show a week? Don´t tell me you have some sort of life that prevents you to record at least two shows a week 😃
Anyways, here are some of my thoughts on this bracket:
- Artistic merits aside, "I just called to say I love you" is a very popular song for students of english as a second language. The lyrics are simple and the delivery is clean, and its tempo allows for sing alongs.
- I'm surprised by the hate for poor old scot Rod Stewart, I think he's a fine artist and still is very popular, but I guess the 80s are not representative of his best work...
- Tears for Fears will get at least two votes in the first showdown, and they will come from Argentina.
- Talking Heads is an awesome band, I was fortunate enough to attend a David Byrne show in a small venue in Córdoba circa 1995, which was sort of a miracle!
- I predict a Beat It / Hungry Like the Wolf bloobath in the final showdown of this region.
- And finally, M Jackson might be gone, but his legacy is intact!:
This guy in your video, Sergio Cortes, bears amazing resemblance to MJ! Does he sound like him? I assume he just "Milli Vanillis" his way through the set list? 😂
Lisa and I went out dancing on Saturday night at an 80s New Wave night. This one we go to the DJ plays videos with the tracks. I had forgotten about the uncensored version of the Girls On Film video, which was pretty close to soft core porn. Like, you couldn't see that version on MTV but you could on Playboy Channel.
In an age of rampant misogyny, Duran Duran's videos may have been the worst of them. That one, Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio... they all just objectified women in a really cringy way.
I still haven’t seen Girls on Film nor Rio videos. But last year, I saw Hungry Like the Wolf for the first time, and I was just laughing so hard at the ridiculous “bitey face” moment in that video! hahahaha, so ridiculous! I am gonna go watch Girls on Film right now. —K
Also, if you can point out which of these acts that Argentina 🇦🇷 does NOT like, that would be interesting as well! I get the Rod Stewart thing, I do, I just think some of his stuff got overplayed and his later stuff was really outside my tastes... If I am honest, I didn't hate "Forever Young" immediately. And "Some Guys Have All the Luck" I probably liked a little when it first came out. "Infatuation," though, I know I immediately disliked! 😂
Actually, most of these acts are still quite popular in Argentina, even REM -though "Out of time" is much more well known than their previous albums-. I guess ZZ Top and Pat Benatar would be the less popular acts. Aerosmith and Van Halen are also huge in South America, so their face off will be one to watch!

Here's a fun, embarrassing fact. The first teen club I frequented had an air band contest one night and my friends and me did Shout.
First off, I love this! Secondly—which part did you play, and did you WIN?
—Keith
Oh no, we came in sixth place. Out of six.
I air drummed.

I would be surprised if you didn't recognize (Don't Go Back to) Rockville if you heard it.
I just went and listened! It's an immediate “like,” but I had never heard it!
*still listening to. good stuff!

This is a great perspective on "I Just Called"! Never would I have thought of its use for this purpose!
I can think of a number of songs in spanish that might serve the same purpose, besides "La cucaracha"!
😂 😂 😂 🪳

I didn't know aobut the guy until now! I don´t know if I'd spend money to see the show, but I´ll let you gouys know if I do.
What if the show pays for your entrance and for you to do a correspondence piece? Would you go then? --K
Listening to this great podcast is enough pay! 😃
Currently we’re trying to leave sufficient time for voting! BUT never fear!! We will drop The Madonna Region Preview on Wednesday!
That's great news!

Thanks for this further analysis. ZZ Top would have a tough time translating culturally to South America, I would think... --K
